Do I need to have prior experience to join the team?
Nope! We don’t require any experience to join the team and there are no try outs.
When is water ski season?
Our main tournament season is in the fall but we have social events throughout the year.
What social events do you have?
As a team we have many social events throughout the year! We have a formal, spring break trip, Winter Conference, and so much more!
When does the season officially start?
We start when fall semester does! Our competitive season goes from September through October. This year our first official tournament is Allentucky held on Sep 10 & 11th. At the end of the season we have to opportunity to travel down south for Collegiate Nationals!
Can I wakeboard or kneeboard?
Yes! For tournaments you can compete in trick on a wakeboard or kneeboard.
What equipment do I need to water ski?
You aren’t required to have your own equipment since we have team equipment you can use. However, if you have your own feel free to bring it!
Where does MSU water ski?
We ski on Grand River which is about a ten minute drive from campus.
What is the cost?
Everyone has to pay dues so the team is able to have equipment, maintain the boat, and put on fun events! You could pay just social dues if you want to soley attend social events but if you plan to ski you’ll pay social and boat dues.
Social dues: $75 Use of the boat: $100 Currently cost per set: $5 (if dues are paid)
If you’re competing in tournaments you need a USA Water Ski Membership: In order to ski with the team, you will need to purchase a USA Water Ski membership for $55. This is an annual membership that offers you secondary insurance in case anything happens while you are at any of our lake sites. Skiers MUST have this in order to ski with the team. For instructions on how to obtain this membership, click here. Click on the individual membership section. Choose under 25 active ($55). On the next screen, make sure to select the Michigan State University Ski Team for the Affiliated Club/Team and then select “AWS – Water Ski – Slalom/Tricks/Jumping” as the sports discipline.
Who is allowed to drive the boat?
Team members must be certified by an A driver to pull skiers. If you are interested in becoming a certified driver, please let us know by contacting us at msuwaterski@gmail.com
Can I try out waterskiing before paying dues?
Yes! Potential new members get one free set to get a feel for waterskiing. We also have a new member BBQ at Grand River the beginning of September so you can meet the current team.
