How do I join the team?

Do I need to have prior experience to join the team?

Nope! We don’t require any experience to join the team and there are no try outs.

When is water ski season?

Our main tournament season is in the fall but we have social events throughout the year.

What social events do you have?

As a team we have many social events throughout the year! We have a formal, spring break trip, Winter Conference, and so much more!

When does the season officially start?

Typically we kick off the season on Labor Day with a casual practice tournament with University of Michigan however, our official competitive season goes from September through October. At the end of the season we have to opportunity to travel down south for Collegiate Nationals! Our full schedule can be seen at the “schedule” tab of the website.

Can I wakeboard or kneeboard?

Yes! For tournaments you can compete in trick on a wakeboard or kneeboard.

What equipment do I need to water ski?

You are not required to have your own equipment seeing as we provide team equipment for our athletes. However, if you have your own equipment, you are more than welcome to bring it!

Where does our team practice?

We ski on Grand River at the Lansing Boat club which is about a ten minute drive from campus.

What is the cost?

There are a few different payment options depending on how active of a member you plan to be:

Social Dues: $75

With this plan you can strictly attend social events, meaning 0% of the skiing but 100% of the fun.

Boat Dues: $175

This plan includes both social dues AND usage of the boat! Keep in mind however you will still need to pay $5 per set on the river to cover gas for the boat.

TOURNAMENT SKIERS ONLY: USA Water Ski Membership: $55

In order to compete with the team, you will need to purchase a USA Water Ski membership for $55. This is an annual membership that offers you secondary insurance in case anything happens while you are at any of our lake sites. Skiers MUST have this in order to ski with the team. For instructions on how to obtain this membership, click here. Click on the individual membership section. Choose under 25 active ($55). On the next screen, make sure to select the Michigan State University Ski Team for the Affiliated Club/Team and then select “AWS – Water Ski – Slalom/Tricks/Jumping” as the sports discipline.

Our dues go toward team equipment, maintaining the boat, and executing fun events!

Who is allowed to drive the boat?

Team members must be certified by an A driver to pull skiers. If you are interested in becoming a certified driver, please let us know by contacting us at msuwaterski@gmail.com

Can I try waterskiing before paying dues?

Yes! Potential new members get one free set to get a feel for waterskiing. We also have a new member BBQ at Grand River the end of August so you can meet the current team.
